Joe Biden on Friday said he’d support any Democrat who wins the party’s presidential nomination — even if it’s rival and progressive Democratic socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.
In an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Biden was asked about his assertion that the party has to unify to defeat President Donald Trump.
“Yes, whomever wins the nomination, I’m going to endorse,” the former vice president responded.
The remarks followed Biden’s reported criticism Thursday of Sanders as not being a member of the Democratic Party. Sanders describes himself as a Democratic socialist.
Biden told ABC he meant the issue was who was best prepared to unite Democrats.
“Bernie is a Democrat. He calls himself a Democratic socialist,” Biden said. “We have a different view on a whole lot of things. He’s a decent guy. I don’t think he shouldn’t be running.”
“The question is whether or not who’s best prepared on day one to try to reunite this party and the country as well as stand on the world stage and reassert our role in the world,” he said.
According to the RealClearPolitics average of Iowa polls, Sanders leads Biden by almost 4 percentage points with 23.8% support compared to Biden’s 20.2%. Pete Buttigieg follows with 15.8% support, followed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts with 14.6% and Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota with 9.6%.
